Cafe Scientifique - Your Immune System is the best friend you will ever have
17th April 2018
Forget your dog, your parents, and your partner; your immune system is the best friend you will ever have. Thanks to this collection of organs and processes, our bodies really are a fortress. We may still get sick, but we successfully fight off millions of microbes and viruses every day. Yup, our immune systems are pretty great, and right at the centre of this defensive force are T-cells, the white knights of the body. Although T-cells are great at defending us against germs, cancer poses a different challenge because cancer usually come from our own tissues. In this talk, we will explore the reasons behind this, and how scientists at Immunocore are trying to develop new therapies that use the power of T-cells to fight cancer.
David Cole currently leads a research group at a company called Immunocore, based at Milton Park. We are trying to find new innovative ways to use the body’s own immune system to fight cancer and other human disease. Before this, I was leading an academic research group at Cardiff University focused on understanding how T-cell, a type of blood cell, sense germs and cancer.
